The use of natural landscape elements in play settings such as rocks, boulders, logs, stepping posts, plant materials, surfaces, level changes and other landscape elements can significantly increase theĀ play value of the playspace as well as providing aesthetic and environment value, offering children the opportunity to engage with nature to explore, learn and develop motor and risk management skills.
The requirements of AS4685 (series) should be applied to natural play elements incorporated into the play setting, and a risk assessment be undertaken to determine the suitability of such elements within the application.
Where the Standards do not apply directly to natural elements, a risk benefit assessment may be required to determine the suitability of such elements.
